Client concerned about leaving money to her adult child.
Apr 17, 2013OUTCOME: Client's goals achieved.
Our office is in the business of understanding and solving our clients' estate-related concerns whenever possible. We recently helped a client who is single with an adult special needs child. The adu ... lt special needs child is dependent on certain government benefits. If our client were to pass away suddenly, then the inheritance that the child might receive, though modest, could possibly ruin his eligibility for government benefits. We were able to create an estate plan that allowed our client to leave certain assets (including a bank account and a small retirement account) for the benefit of her son without upsetting his eligibility for government benefits. This protected the son and gave the client peace of mind. Similar methods could be used to protect inheritances for children with creditor problems, fragile marriages, gambling problems, drug problems, etc. Sometimes our clients need only a simple will. Sometimes our clients need much more than a simple will. Our job is to listen, understand, educate, and prepare the estate plan that the CLIENT chooses.
