My father passed on 12 years ago and recently i was told by my mother that she only gets ssi on her self.

Take her to the local office and apply for survivor's benefits based on Father's SS. Ask that it be dated when she applied for SSI.

You can get survivor's benefits at age 60 and switch to yours as late as age 70. This is a good way to go it possible. Appeal the overpayment.
