Do you mean he left town or died? If he died or is disabled the kids might get something.

Your eligibility starts from date you are disabled. Talk with a lawyer to see if you should appeal.

PROBABLY. Most disability insurance has some offset if you get SSDI. Look at your policy for the answer as it pertains to you.
