Ricardo Alonso Ampudia

Ricardo Ampudia represents clients in a wide variety of international disputes, including investor-State, commercial, and State-State arbitration, as well as litigation in matters pertaining to securities, international trade, international human rights, and international criminal law proceedings before INTERPOL.

Mr. Ampudia's experience covers numerous international investment and trade agreements, as well as a wide range of industries, including agriculture, construction, healthcare, internet and technology (including disputes against ICANN), oil and gas, electricity and heat generation, textiles, steel manufacturing, and transportation.  His experience also includes representation of clients in the procurement of public contracts and related civil and criminal investigations.  

He has advised clients and clerked for tribunals in high-profile proceedings in various languages and under various arbitration rules, including ICSID, UNCITRAL, DIAC, ICC, DR-CAFTA, HMAA, the AHLA, and the ICDR.  Some of his most recent representations include:

• Omega Engineering LLC and Mr. Oscar Rivera v. Republic of Panama, ICSID Case No. ARB/16/42.  Represent claimants, a U.S. construction company and its CEO, in treaty arbitration under ICSID rules;
• Represent European hospitality investors in UNCITRAL investment treaty dispute against a North American State.

• Advised a U.S. healthcare services provider in proceedings before U.S. state and federal courts, as well as before a panel constituted under the arbitration rules of the American Health Lawyers Association;
• Pluspetrol Perú Corporation and others v. Perupetro S.A., ICSID Case No. ARB/12/28.  Represented a consortium of five energy companies from Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and South America in ICSID proceedings in Washington, DC, against a South American State-owned enterprise in a natural gas dispute.

• EDF International S.A. v. Republic of Hungary, UNCITRAL.  Represented Hungary in UNCITRAL proceedings under the Energy Charter Treaty in the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague in an investment dispute against a European multinational company over energy and heat cogeneration;
• MOL Hungarian Oil and Gas Company Plc v. Republic of Croatia, ICSID Case No. ARB/13/32 and PCA Case No. 2014-15, UNCITRAL.  Represented the investor in UNCITRAL and ICSID parallel proceedings in Washington, DC, and Paris against a European State in a dispute over energy investments and allegations of corruption;
• Advising a South American hydrocarbon transport company in a cross-border contractual dispute with a North American distributor under Rules of Arbitration of Houston Maritime Arbitrators Association;
• Representation of a North American investor in proceedings before INTERPOL;
• DCA Trust v. ICANN (.AFRICA).  Representation of an African internet trust in an ICDR dispute in Washington, DC, against ICANN over the registration of domain name extensions;
• Dot Registry, LLC v. ICANN (.INC/.LLC/.LLP).  Representation of a U.S. internet company in an ICDR dispute in Washington, DC, against ICANN over registration of domain name extensions;
• Representation of a North American investor in proceedings before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

Additionally, Mr. Ampudia has represented and advised clients in numerous proceedings before U.S. Courts.  His class action experience includes In re Petrobras Sec. Litig., 14-cv-09662-JSR, a securities class action filed on behalf of Petrobras investors against the company.

Prior to founding International Dispute Resources LLC, Mr. Ampudia worked in the litigation department of a major international law firm in Washington, DC.  

Mr. Ampudia is Co-Founder of the Georgetown International Arbitration Alumni group.  He has also given graduate-level lectures on international commercial arbitration at Georgetown Law.

During law school, he served on the Executive Board of the American University International Law Review and was the editor of the Human Rights Academy and Humanitarian Law Book.  Mr. Ampudia was also an intern at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the United States Department of Justice.
