My colleague is correct. Your wife is probably attempting to lay the foundation for battered spouse waiver to the joint filing requirement (I-751).

Make an INFOPASS at your nearest USCIS office, ask them to stamp your passport. Make sure you bring a copy of your I-90 receipt.
