Seven months of “representation” in name only — look her up before you put your freedom in her hands

I retained Corey Cohen’s firm for $5,000, and Corey Cohen assigned Lizet Dominguez Mejia to represent me. What followed was approximately seven months of “representation” in name only. Dominguez did not initiate a single substantive conversation with me about my case. No meaningful meeting. No rea...l interview. She never asked me what happened, meaningfully discussed the allegations, or showed interest in extensive exculpatory evidence I repeatedly told her existed. She scheduled a deposition of the complainant before ever interviewing her own client. I was not even informed of major developments, including the filing of formal charges and the State declining another count. She also filed a waiver of my speedy-trial rights without consulting me or obtaining my consent, despite my express position that I did not want them waived. During a critical period, Dominguez was vacationing in Cabo San Lucas. She did not tell me she would miss a hearing. Her public social-media posts documented the trip. Public records show she filed Notices of Unavailability to protect OTHER clients during that same absence, but not me. When I terminated her for cause, Dominguez sent me a Motion to Withdraw claiming “irreconcilable differences.” I rejected it in writing, told her the stated grounds were false, and refused to sign it. Less than 48 hours later, she filed essentially the same motion anyway, in my name and voice, after removing my signature block. Both versions are in the court record. She also withheld my case file for six days after termination. Discovery was finally provided after I fired the firm. Search the Orange County Clerk records under “Mejia, Lizet Dominguez.” Public records show Dominguez was arrested in Orange County in 2023 for domestic-violence battery. Corey Cohen represented HER in that case. It was later dismissed after the alleged victim signed a declination of prosecution. Cohen then assigned Dominguez to represent me on domestic-violence allegations. None of this was disclosed to me. St. Lucie County records also show Dominguez received an adjudication of guilt for False Report to Law Enforcement arising from a 2004 Port St. Lucie Police Department incident. I was assigned an attorney with a public-record adjudication for false reporting in a case where false reporting was central to my defense. That was not disclosed either. Before hiring her, go to the Law Office of Corey I. Cohen & Associates’ Google reviews and search specifically for “Lizet.” Do not just look at the 5.0 rating. You will find other former clients describing the same problems I experienced: lack of communication, difficulty getting answers, repeatedly chasing the firm for information, and an attorney who was simply unavailable. Those reviews are easy to miss under the firm’s enormous volume of glowing reviews. My court filing also documents positive Google reviews from people who were not clients, including one person who stated, “I haven’t personally had the chance to work with this law office,” before recommending it anyway. My complaint is not that I “didn’t like the result.” I paid thousands for a criminal-defense attorney who, in my experience, did not interview me, meaningfully investigate critical evidence, keep me informed, or respect my instructions on important procedural matters, then withheld my file and filed a withdrawal motion after I expressly rejected its stated basis. Based on what I experienced and documented, I do not believe Lizet Dominguez Mejia should be entrusted with anyone’s liberty. I have sought sanctions, disgorgement of fees, and referral to the Florida Bar. I also believe portions of what occurred warrant investigation by the appropriate authorities for potential criminal conduct. I would not trust Lizet Dominguez Mejia with a parking ticket, much less another human being’s freedom.

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
