Michael Silverman had a distinguished military career as a combat arms officer in the U.S. Army before becoming an attorney. He was an enlisted Marine before being commissioned as a regular Army officer in 1988. He served in every officer leadership position from platoon leader to battalion commander. That service gives him a unique perspective on military justice that very few attorneys have. Silverman served three combat tours in Iraq in leadership positions at the company, battalion, and brigade level—including a tour as a battalion commander in Al Anbar Province in 2007-2008.
After retiring from the Army, Silverman taught World History at Armstrong State University in Savannah, Georgia and worked as a consultant to the Department of Defense on counterinsurgency issues. Silverman is the author of many articles, op-eds, and published letters on the Iraq War and counterinsurgency. He is also the Author of Awakening Victory: How Iraqi Tribes and American Troops Reclaimed al Anbar Province and Defeated al Qaeda in Iraq (Casemate Publishing, 2011).
His unique perspective allows him to think about both administrative and judicial military actions in ways most attorneys cannot. He has the ability to think like a commander and works closely with unit-level leaders to seek the most favorable outcomes for our clients in any situation.
In addition to military justice matters, Mr. Silverman is one of the very few experts with Defense Base Act (DBA) claims and currently handles numerous DBA clients throughout the United States and abroad.
Along with the expected leadership positions, Silverman also spent two years detailed to the Central Intelligence Agency in Langley, Virginia working on policy and coordination issues between government agencies in worldwide operations. That experience gave him a strong background in issues involved with classified litigation and security-related legal matters.
Silverman received a bachelor of arts in political science from the University of North Florida, a master of arts in political science from Tarleton State University, and a juris doctorate at Savannah Law School.
He is barred in the State of Georgia.
