Kids are often punished for surviving circumstances they did not chose- mental illness, addition, poverty, neglect, violence-- and someone has to stand between them and a system that confuses need with guilt. Every time a child is seen instead of processed, the future bends-- sometimes only slightly, but enough to matter.
