Nancy Anne Burnett

Hiring Nancy Burnett for my custody case is one of the biggest regrets I have from this entire process. If you are considering hiring her to handle something as important as custody of your child, I strongly suggest you think twice. I provided Nancy with evidence for my case, including text messag...es. She did not present ANY of my evidence at my hearing. The other side presented partial screenshots, and she did not challenge them. She did not cross-examine on important issues or give the court the evidence I had provided her to show my side of what was happening. I sat in that courtroom and watched a hearing involving my child unfold while the evidence I had spent time gathering and giving to my attorney went unused. I walked out of court knowing the judge had made a decision without ever seeing the evidence I had given my own attorney. After the hearing, I fired Nancy and requested my file back. When I received it, pieces of my own file were missing, and I found documents belonging to someone else mixed in with mine. That only added to my concerns about how my case and documents had been handled. What made the entire experience even worse was Nancy’s response afterward. She told me I was just upset because I lost. Of course I was upset about the outcome, but that completely ignored WHY I was upset with her representation. My attorney went into a custody hearing without presenting any of the evidence I had provided and without challenging evidence from the other side. Those failures mattered. Dismissing my concerns as simply being angry because I lost was unacceptable. I hired an attorney because I expected her to actually advocate for me and present my case. I did not hire someone just to stand beside me while the other side presented theirs. I have seen other reviews describing Nancy as passionate, caring, and someone who fights for her clients. Maybe that was their experience, and maybe that was the attorney she once was. It was absolutely NOT the attorney I experienced. Based on the representation I received, I believe that time has passed. In my opinion, Nancy needs to retire rather than continue taking cases this important when this is the level of representation a client can receive. If you are considering hiring her, ask very specific questions before you pay her. Ask exactly what evidence she plans to introduce, how she plans to challenge the opposing party’s evidence, how she will prepare you for court, and how your documents and case file will be handled. Do not assume that because you gave your attorney evidence, the court will ever see it. I made that mistake. I eventually hired another attorney, and I wish I had done it sooner. I would never hire Nancy Burnett again, and I cannot recommend her for a custody matter. I wish someone had warned me before I trusted her with something this important.
