If this money is taken out of your 401K (cash out money?) and is in your checking account it can be garnished

I know you said this is pro se but it indeed sounds like a chap 13 - in chap 7 no debts would be paid by the trustee

The life insurance company will pay whoever is named as the beneficiary. The rest of the story won't make a difference in who is paid
