Former federal prosecutor Sloan P. Ellis has extensive experience litigating in South Carolina federal and state courts. Having spent almost a decade in public service as a federal and state prosecutor, Sloan prosecuted thousands of cases from complex federal white collar crime, wire fraud and money laundering, to organized crime, gang and drug offenses, and violent crimes.
Sloan’s public service began at the 13th Circuit Solicitor’s Office in Greenville, South Carolina. There Sloan prosecuted thousands of state cases ranging from murder, burglary, and armed robbery to various drug-related and white collar crimes.
As a federal prosecutor, Sloan worked hand-in-hand with federal and state law enforcement agencies such as the FBI, DEA, IRS, Homeland Security, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, SLED, and the S.C. Department of Revenue to investigate and prosecute white collar crime, violent crimes, and drug offenses. With Brandi Hinton, he prosecuted the 50th person in the United States to be charged with fraud in connection with the Paycheck Protection Program established under the CARES Act. Sloan was the recipient of the 2020 U.S. Attorney’s Award for excellence in prosecution.
Prior to his service as a federal prosecutor, Sloan spent almost three years in private practice at Nexsen Pruet, a South Carolina-based firm that represents clients in virtually every industry in North and South Carolina and around the country. Sloan worked directly for William W. Wilkins, former Chief Judge of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals and Chair of the Federal Sentencing Commission, focusing on federal white collar criminal defense and complex civil litigation. He represented clients nationwide being charged with or investigated for tax fraud, securities fraud, insider trading, health care fraud, violations of the False Claims Act, and various drug offenses. He was actively engaged in appellate practice where he represented clients with appeals pending in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, the South Carolina Supreme Court and the South Carolina Court of Appeals.
Prior to joining Nexsen Pruet, Sloan worked in Charleston, South Carolina, with former U.S. Attorney E. Bart Daniel. He focused on white collar criminal defense and was a member of the trial team who, during a month-long trial, defended the last person to be tried in what has been called the “largest and most complex white collar investigation in the history of South Carolina.”
Sloan is a ninth-generation South Carolinian who grew up on a farm in the small town of Due West. Working on the farm as a young man taught him the value of hard work and dedication to a cause. Sloan brings that work ethic and commitment to the clients he represents and works every day to get them the best results possible.
Outside of work, Sloan is a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Haynsworth-Perry Inn of Court.

When I first meet Sloan, his young appearance concerned me. "Sloan will absolutely work hard for your cause. He will take a strategic approach to accomplishing your goals and is vested in protecting your best interests."
"Sloan is one of the most talented litigators in the State of South Carolina. We have worked together and on opposing sides for many years, and he is always a zealous advocate for his clients. Sloan has tried more cases than most lawyers twice his age, which is a huge advantage in civil litigation for businesses and personal injury cases. He has tremendous expertise in all areas of criminal defense, especially securities fraud, healthcare fraud, and complex conspiracies. In every case, Sloan makes it his mission to prepare for trial from day one, and I have never seen anyone work harder than Sloan Ellis."
"Sloan has spent many years as a prosecutor and criminal defense attorney developing relationships with other attorneys, law enforcement, and judges in the Upstate area. I enthusiastically recommend that potential clients contact him for all of their civil litigation and criminal defense needs. His intellect, drive, ambition, and experience are simply unparalleled, and I would not hesitate to refer a friend, colleague, or family member to him!"
