I am a native of Charleston. I received my primary education at Charleston Day School and attended Porter Gaud High School After graduation from Washington and Lee University, I entered the Masters in Public Administration Program at the College of Charleston. It was a two year program and I decided to leave after a year to attend law school.
I began working as a law clek in 1983 with a firm specializing in workers compensation and insurance defense work. The firm offerd me a job in Birmingham Alabama upon graduation and when it merged with a firm in Mobile, I was tansfered to Mobile and worked with an exceptional attorney in the field of medical malpractice defense. I wanted to return to my home town and did so in 1987, leaving behind a great job. I worked with the same firm in Charleston for over 21 years, including 13 years as managing attorney. I co-founded Corrigan & Chandler with Nelson Chandler in Febuary of 2010. I am primarily a litigator having taken some 200 cases to a jury verdict and more to a ruling by a Judge or Comissoner. I am a certified mediator and have conducted a number of them.
When my work allows the time, I have a passion for Colonial American History and the European back stories which lead to the colonization of this Country by European powers. I also study the Tudor and Stuart monarchs in England and the exiled senior branch of the British Royal family.
I collect regional art and volunteer for a dog rescue organization. I am lucky to live on the coast and get out on a boat or to the beach with my dogs as often as possible. I pretend to fish and prefer war stories about fishing more than the law. I am passionately concerned about First Amendment Rights, especially free speach but handle cases in all SC courts on a wide variety of topics. Construction Law is a very active area of practice in this area along with product liability cases. I enjoy the variety of cases. I have excellent claims represetatives handling my insurance defense files. Boredom is never an issue.
It is a smaller part of my practice but the representation of small businesses in these uncertain economic times is very satisfying. Historic Preservation Law, an off shoot of zoning and planning law, is also a fascinating area of the law. If forced to define a specilaty, it is working to avoid litigation when best for my client, preparing cases for trial and being ready to try any case.
If you have never visited Charleton, you should for the natural and man made beauty. If you have any interest in history, forget the high school text book version and come see the real thing. Travel advice is free.
