On April 29, 2022, plaintiff's decedent Jack Mills, a man in his 80s, was discharged from Prisma Health Richland Hospital after undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement surgery. Later that day ... , he experienced shortness of breath and confusion. His family called an ambulance, and he was re-admitted to the hospital. His family members were not allowed to stay with him due to Covid protocols. That evening, he fell and broke his hip. Mills sued Prisma Health Richland Hospital for negligence claiming that the hospital staff did not follow the standard of care and that this negligence caused his fall and injuries. The jury returned a verdict for $315,000, which was reduced to $300,000 based on the statutory cap.
