Poorly handled custody case

On November 8th, I consulted Anita Powers to secure sole custody of my daughter in a non-contested case. I stressed the urgency and requested the paperwork by December 22, 2023, to meet another related deadline. The court date was set for December 11th, with assurances of meeting the deadline. Despi...te paying a fee of $1,335 plus a $185 credit card surcharge, the service was abysmal. The signed order only emerged on January 2, 2024, after a disgraceful delay at the county office, awaiting Anita's signature. This attorney's conduct was outrageously unprofessional. She blatantly ignored the critical timing of the custody case, creating undue stress and jeopardizing the entire matter. Once payment was made, her communication turned appallingly poor, ignoring my calls. I was repeatedly deceived by her secretary, who falsely claimed the order was ready, only to discover it was held up due to Anita's neglect to sign it. This level of incompetence and dismal client service is deplorable for any legal professional. I strongly advise against using this lawyer's services.

Child Custody Case

Paid the woman $2000 back in 2005 for emergency custody. Got one document, (that's right ONE) out of it. She never once called my daughter to discuss why this document was worded in the way it was. The father, who was not even named on the birth certificate at the time, got everything he asked for..., and lied about the situation, and was holding the child and would not release the child to his mother nor her parents. The child had been living with my daughter. She was never married to the father. Anita never once called my daughter to verify that what was being said by the father was the truth or not before the papers were signed by a judge. She called after the fact and then got an attitude when we were upset on what SHE agreed on. I felt like we had been sucker punched. It has been a nightmare ever since. Did Anita Powers refund any of our money? What do you think? Ineffective to say the least and a huge mistake in hiring her. I have since been told that she has done this and worse to others and they did not think they had any recourse. I figure our statute of limitations has run out or I would definitely be filing a complaint with the bar association against her for her handling of our case. You can best believe that we went with another attorney after that situation. Your money comes hard, especially the kind of money that is involved in family matters. You don't expect to have to pay that kind of money and not get top notch service and at least a level of respect from the person you have paid it to. Didn't know this website was available or I would have posted this review a long time ago.

A. Powers should stick to traffic cases

Ms. Powers acted as my lawyer in a case involving some real estate I purchased. She misinterpreted the NC law in the case and in the end I was forced to give up most of the land and to pay all of the plaintifffs legal fees to extract myself from the situation.
