Mr. Young graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1971. After a year of teaching German and coaching soccer and cross-country at Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, VA, he joined the United States Air Force in 1972.
During his 14 years of active duty, Mr. Young earned his aeronautical rating as a navigator. He chose to train as a Weapons Systems Officer (WSO) in the F-4 Phantom II fighter jet. His choice of aircraft resulted in an assignment to Udorn RTAFB, Thailand in 1974 -1975. After Thailand, Mr. Young returned to the USAF Navigation School as an Instructor Navigator at Mather AFB in Sacramento, CA.
In 1977, Mr. Young was chosen as one of twenty five Air Force officers to attend law school as part of the Funded Legal Education Program, which was implemented to meet mid-level judge advocate staffing requirements for the Air Force. He received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law in 1980. Following graduation, Mr. Young continued to serve on active duty as a Judge Advocate (JAG) until 1986, when he resigned his commission and joined the Air Force Reserve as a Judge Advocate. During Operation Desert Shield, he was the first USAF Reserve Judge Advocate recalled to active duty to assume the role of Staff Judge Advocate (ranking lawyer on base) at a major Air Force Base.
Mr. Young began private practice in 1987 with a firm that ultimately became Walker, Young & Barwick in Goldsboro, NC. Between 1987 and 1994, his practice consisted of insurance defense litigation in the areas of automobile negligence and medical malpractice. In 1993, Mr. Young also became certified as a Superior Court Mediator in the State of North Carolina. He has mediated approximately 200 cases since that time.
In 1994, Mr. Young joined the firm of Narron & Holdford in Wilson, NC. While in Wilson, the focus of his practice changed from representing defendant car drivers and physicians who had been sued for malpractice to representing those who were injured as a result of medical negligence throughout Eastern North Carolina.
Mr. Young relocated to Wilmington, NC in 2005 and established The Young Law Firm, PC, where he continues to represent plaintiffs in civil litigation on matters of personal injury, wrongful death, medical malpractice, nursing home negligence, hospital negligence, traumatic brain injury and trucking accidents. He is a certified mediator and has also served as an arbitrator at the request of parties involved in litigation.
