Unprofessional, Unprepared, and Unsafe – This Attorney Should Not Be Practicing

I was referred to J. Boyce Garland Jr. through Legal Shield for a sensitive and time-critical case involving DSS. What I experienced was not just disappointing — it was deeply unprofessional, unsettling, and inappropriate. Mr. Garland showed zero preparedness, repeatedly forgot my name, and was cl...early unfamiliar with the facts of my case during every conversation. Instead of protecting me, he seemed disinterested and disconnected, offering no real strategy or legal guidance. What made the experience worse was his behavior: he asked invasive and irrelevant personal questions about my private life — including details about men in my home, male clothing, and my child’s father — that had nothing to do with the case. It was demeaning and felt like harassment. I left every meeting feeling more overwhelmed and even paranoid than when I arrived. He offered no protection, no clarity, and made me feel vulnerable in one of the most stressful times of my life. His representation was so inadequate that I had to file a formal complaint, seek help through the NC Ombudsman, and pursue legal aid just to have a chance at justice. Based on my experience and reading similar reviews, this man should retire. He is not fit to handle sensitive cases — particularly those involving women, families, or high-stakes DSS issues. I cannot stress this enough: Avoid this attorney at all costs. He failed me — and I wouldn’t want anyone else to go through what I did.

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
