Merritt is the perfect combination of knowledge, skill, and empathy. In today's society fathers' rights often take a back seat to the mothers' involving custody and children. Merritt made sure that all of my rights were upheld often coming up with suggestions and ideas that I didn't think of during m...y court battle. He is a no-nonsense individual. He tells you what's best for you and the CHILDREN with the evidence to back it up and isn't a "yes man". He is also an ace at cross examining on the stand, not just with paperwork and contracts. I had been dealing with my family law issues for years. I had road block after road block due to the nature of the law in North Carolina and my fear due to my situation. I spoke to several attorneys, but I couldn't afford some of the retainer fees that I was being charged. There was also no sense of ...urgency in any of the attorneys that I had previously spoken to. I had to wait weeks for each consultation, and each consultation required high amounts up front without an exact explanation of if these were hours or just a retainer. I started speaking to the county, to DSS, to the local DV advocates, to the lawyers I knew in the area - everyone! It took several months of research. The attorney who works for my local DSS office recommended Merritt and his practice. So, I ended up in Merritt's care, and I am so thankful that I did. In a situation where I was used to not feeling safe, Merritt made me feel safe and protected. Paperwork was filed Tuesday and two weeks later, my matter is resolved. He is honestly a beast. Thankfully, we solved everything outside of court, but I was completely confident that he would be a monster in court. He also told me the amount of money he needed and for what. He said I will need this amount and it's because this is my hourly rate and what I believe it will take due to your circumstances. It was less than anyone I had previously spoken to, and he knew how urgent a DV case is (and he helped me!). He sat with me. He listened. He looked up all of the information I gave him and got to work. By the time I was in his office, he had already written the paperwork I would need to start the process. I don't know where I would be without his help. After each meeting, he always asked me, "are you okay?" - And that meant a lot. Even when I wasn't OK, I was still OK because he just has this confidence that exudes out of him and assures you that he knows what he's talking about and you will be OK. I am OK. It was not an easy road; it's still a tough road, but Merritt made my road a lot less bumpy. I hope that I never need an attorney again, but if I do, I for sure will think of Merritt first!
