Gregg E. McDougal

Gregg McDougal has a national practice focusing on complex business litigation and catastrophic personal injury matters. With 30 years of trial experience, Gregg has represented clients in complex commercial disputes involving contracts, mergers and acquisitions, fraud, fiduciary duty, trade secrets, and employment matters. In addition to his general corporate representation, Gregg has extensive litigation and trial experience representing clients in wrongful death suits and catastrophic personal injury matters. Gregg often manages clients' litigation with alternative fee arrangements.

As the lead counsel in numerous high profile cases, Gregg has represented a number of well-known clients: five time Olympic medalist Marion Jones in a defamation suit; Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Tiger Woods; a well-known football coach after his termination from a large university; Duke University in matters arising out of allegations made against members of the Duke men's lacrosse team; and a Malaysian corporation in a breach of contract action against singer-songwriter and actor Kenny Rogers. He has also successfully defended corporations and executives throughout the United States in numerous business cases.

Gregg has dedicated many hours to civic and community organizations including: Legal Aid of North Carolina, Board Member; First Tee of the Triangle, Board Member and Past Chair; Ronald McDonald House, Board Member and Past Chair; Communities in Schools, Board Member and Past Chair; Coalition for Children and Youth, Founder, Board Member and Past Chair; Human Relations Commission, Commissioner; Young Life, Board Member; Boys and Girls Club, Board Member; Raleigh Transit Authority, Board Member; Neighbor to Neighbor, Board Member; and the American Cancer Society, Board Member.

Gregg is a recipient of the prestigious Doctor J. W. Fanning Fellowship Award for Civic and Community Service.

From 2008 - 2017, Gregg has been recognized as one of the "Best Lawyers in America" in the Commercial Litigation field. Prior to joining Shanahan McDougal, Gregg spent his legal career as a partner at two AM Law 100 law firms. Gregg earned his Juris Doctorate from Wake Forest University and a Bachelor's of Science degree in Finance from Miami University.

Gregg has been married to Nancy McDougal for 28 years. They have two children: Davis and Garrett.
