Oftentimes clients come to me with a plan that no longer makes sense given today's estate tax structure. Such was the case for this particular client, who had an unnecessarily complex trust for a relat ... ively small estate. I was able to help her restate her entire trust to enable her successor trustees to easily follow it, while ensuring it maximized any income tax and capital gains tax advantages the law allowed. As always, I supported her through the funding stage as well, ensuring her assets were properly titled in the name of her living trust.

Estate Plan - Single Woman, Multiple Properties in and Out of State, with No Immediate Family Nearby

I love helping clients put together estate plans. I especially love doing so when my client has no obvious family member nearby to fill the role of trustee or executor. Such was the case for this parti ... cular client, who owned real estate in Chicago and out-of-state. In this instance, I created a living trust for my client and named a series of successor trustees who could step in and take care of my client upon her disability, and her assets at death. We funded the trust with her in and out-of-state real estate, helping to avoid costly probate and ancillary probate proceedings. Best of all, we were able to give my client peace of mind in knowing that she would be cared for, and her wishes attended to, no matter the circumstance.

When parents of young children come to my firm, I strongly encourage them to set up either a living trust or a will with testamentary trusts. In doing so, parents can create framework of financial supp ... ort for their loved ones that can continue past a parent's disability or death. In this particular instance, we put together a living trust that ensured that the parents and their dependent children would be supported in the event of a parent's disability, and that upon the parents' deaths, the children's trust would continue to be managed by a trusted advisor, who could mentor the children as they grow into their inheritance.
