Lopez v. Bimbo Bakeries USA, Inc.
N/AOUTCOME: Plaintiff's Verdict
An hour after Yaire Lopez told her boss that she was pregnant and had been advised by her doctor to somewhat limit her lifting and climbing activities at work, she was placed on leave - and eventually ... fired. The San Francisco jury found in Ms. Lopez's favor, determining that Bimbo Bakeries USA had engaged in gender and pregnancy discrimination, in violation of the California Fair Employment and Housing Act. It awarded Lopez $340,700 for losses and damages, plus another $2 million in punitive damages, and more than $1 million in attorneys fees. Two years later, the verdict was completely affirmed on appeal.
