A woman was charged with felony theft by check in three counties. She had written checks to buy cars to be driven by her boyfriend. In Travis County, upon the advice of another lawyer, she had alread ... y plead guilty to one of the charges. I was appointed to her case in Williamson County. She told a story of being convinced by her boyfriend that if she paid for the cars, the government would reimburse her, since the boyfriend claimed to work for Homeland Security. It took months of investigation to find the evidence of his scam and prove that she was the victim, not the criminal. Ultimately all three cases were dismissed. I take pride in the fact that I was able to overcome extreme reluctance on the part of three District Attorneys to believe her story, which, frankly, would make a great book.
