As an operational law attorney and trial counsel for the Virginia Army National Guard while serving in Afghanistan, Carter learned how to negotiate with locals and prosecute insurgents. These days he’s more inclined to represent individuals and businesses as part of our Litigation group.
The Franklin County native enlisted in the Army after graduating from Washington and Lee University, receiving his commission after completing Officer Candidate School. After five years, he left active duty with the rank of Captain and joined the National Guard while in law school at the University of Richmond.
During this time, he served as a primary staff officer for two battalions and, after completion of law school, switched branches to become a Judge Advocate. He’s also accredited for the preparation, presentation, and prosecution of claims for veterans’ benefits before the Department of Veterans Affairs.
In addition to his law degree, Carter completed the Army’s Judge Advocate Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, an intensive graduate level legal study.
He is a member of the board of directors of Trust House and is a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
