Alexander Irvine Saunders

Alexander I. Saunders offers clients more than 30 years of experience in tax and corporate law. His practice includes tax planning for individuals and businesses, estate planning, and corporate sales and acquisitions. He also represents businesses and individuals before tax authorities and in court on tax matters.

Alex has written and lectured extensively in the fields of tax law, trust and estate law and corporate law and was one of the authors of the first treatise on limited liability companies in Virginia. He is listed in Best Lawyers in America in the field of Taxation, Trusts and Estates, and Corporate Law and in Virginia Business as one of the “Legal Elite” in taxes/estates/trusts. Alex has been named by Best Lawyers in America as the best in this geographic area in the field of Corporate Law in one year and for 2012/2013 in the field of Taxation. Alex also has been named in The Roanoker magazine as the Valley’s top individual attorney in the fields of Tax Law and Trusts and Estates by vote of members of the local bar. Alex’s work also has resulted in him being listed in the field of Taxation by Virginia Super Lawyer magazine.

He’s a graduate of the University of Virginia and University of Virginia Law School and has a master of laws degree in taxation from New York University. He served as law clerk to Judge H. S. Boreman of the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals before joining Woods Rogers.

Alex is a member and former chairman of the Roanoke College Estate Planning Council, member and former chairman of the Ferrum College Estate Planning Council, member of the Roanoke Valley Estate Planning Council and member of The Jefferson Center’s Planned Giving Council.

Alex has served on the board of the Roanoke Valley YMCA and is legal counsel to the organization. He has served on numerous other local charitable boards, including the Science Museum of Western Virginia and the Foundation for Roanoke Valley.
