Christopher Scott Johnson

I am an associate in Newport News office of Kaufman & Canoles.  My practice centers around advising owners, directors, and officers of closely-held businesses and corporations on the tax implications of various business decisions and transactions. I help my clients analyze, plan for, and resolve tax-related issues with respect to:

1. Business formation
2. Mergers, acquisitions, and divisions;
3. Operations and management; and
4. Transfer and disposition of business ownership-interests and assets to family members, key employees, and financial and strategic buyers.

When transferring certain key assets (e.g., real estate, accounts receivable, goodwill), I utilizes transactions such as like-kind exchanges and installment sales to maximize tax efficiency.

I also counsel 501(c)(3) public charities, private foundations, and other tax-exempt organizations on entity formation, Federal and State filing and return requirements, and general compliance matters.

Lastly, I represent individuals and entities before the United States Tax Court, the Internal Revenue Service, the Virginia Department of Taxation, and Virginia municipalities in various tax controversy matters.
