Dana, did not have my interests at all! She never once advised me to not sign my divorce decree settlement in December of 2018. She worked very hard for me to sign the settlement before the end of 2018 when the alimony law changed. As a result I now pay taxes on my alimony when my divorce was no...t final until June of 2020. I was one week from a 30 yr marriage. It is a huge financial burden every year to pay the state and federal taxes. The alimony is tax deductible to my ex- spouse. She worked with my ex's attorney all day to get that decree signed the last day in December of 2018 when the law changed. I received alimony while separated and after I pay taxes now I am not getting one dime more than when I was formally separated living in the home. My home had just been listed. I had no idea of proceeds on our home, as we ended up having to make some major repairs and drop the price. My husband paid all the bills in our home and my medical insurance. Every year as I pay this big tax bill in the thousands, I wonder why Ms. Cornett never once advised me, if you sign this today you will pay taxes on this alimony. She did know the law was changing, my ex husbands attorney informed her. They worked together all day to get me to sign that settlement before Jan. 1 of 2019 at a costs to me of $300.00 an hour. I would not recommend her to anyone and every year at tax time I try to forgive myself for making such a bad decision for trusting her. I ask myself also why did she choose to not help me. My divorce cost over $5,000 and no child custody battle.
