A red flag warning for hiring a lawyer is their unavailability. I emailed to her and her assistant, the total history of my divorce in 1996. This included the final divorce decree, the property settlement and the qdro. This was 3 days before our phone consultation on July 2nd, so she had ample time ...to digest the contents. My case is not complicated for a lawyer with federal qdro experience. During our consultation she said she would need to get expert qdro guidance from a lawyer with another firm. I hesitated and then agreed because my ex spouse has been receiving a third of my retirement for 30 years and I would like to receive a court ordered portion of her retirement. I heard nothing from her for 8 days and called her office on July 10. Mary Huff was not available nor was her assistant. I left a voice mail asking if there was any development with her contacting the other lawyer. No return calls until 3:30 that afternoon. She emailed me saying she was in court all day. Why couldn’t the lady that took my call in the morning telling me to leave a message have told me that. Red flag 2 - failure to communicate. I emailed her and asked if she was capable of handling my case or should I seek counsel elsewhere. She responded saying I should find another lawyer because my case is very complex. She seemed to think it was up to me to contact OPM and prepare the qdro my ex spouse is supposed to do. She may excel in divorce and child custody matters, but she wasted my time and a consultation fee, by giving me the initial impression she could do the qdro case for me. I am almost 83 years of age and I don’t have the luxury of time to be wasted with unqualified lawyers.
