I couldn't have done it without her.

I am so grateful to have found Michelle while going through a divorce with two children. When things got messy she was the calm voice of reason that I needed, I actually didn't worry too much when things got crazy because I knew I could trust her training and knowledge to help me make the right decis...ions. She also was understanding and made you feel like she really cared for you as a person not just a client. Working with Michelle was so much more then just transaction as someone to be represented by her and her firm, but rather a kind soul in a very crazy time in my life. I felt at ease having her sit with me in the courthouse, and having her represent my whole case. She was always easy to get ahold of, easy to work with, friendly, and understanding.

Marital dispute

Michelle D. Smith, Esq. represented me during a difficult marital separation dispute. Because I had never been confronted with a legal problem like this, I was uncertain of how to proceed and unsure of my options. Michelle restored my confidence. In the weeks following the first meeting in Michel...le’s office, I came to appreciate her legal expertise, her wisdom, and her judgement. I trusted her to navigate through the legal storm in which I found myself. I have never had reason to doubt that assessment. The matter was eventually settled after a year and a half, despite much foot-dragging by the opposing party in the dispute. Throughout the ordeal, Ms. Smith made me feel that I was her only client or, at least, her most important client. Phone calls were promptly returned and the many E-mail messages were answered in a timely manner. When I was frustrated–and occasionally angry–with the opposing party, Michelle was quick to counsel calmness, allowing me to climb down with my dignity intact. When I made suggestions that really were not in my best interest, she carefully explained why I needed to reconsider. When I had questions about the law, she patiently explained all that I needed to know. At no time did I feel that I was being lectured or talked down to; she spoke to me as if she was a close friend although we had never met before the separation matter arose. Although she has never met anyone in my family, they all know her name and they know how appreciative I am for her invaluable support, counsel, and patience. The marital separation was a trying time, but without Michelle it would have been far worse. Although her firm’s billing statement has been paid in full, I remain in her debt.

Child Custody

Michelle's organization and attention to detail allowed us to gather key evidence in my child custody case. It was a difficult time for me and my children's safety was of the utmost importance to me. Her creativity and in-depth knowledge of child custody laws allowed me to not only win my case, but... keep my children safe.

"I have known and worked with and against Michelle since she became a member of the States Attorneys Office many decades ago. After being elevated to the supervising attorney in the District Court, a position she held for many years, Michelle ventured out into private practice about ten years ago. Since she elected to specialize in family law, which was also my speciality, I have observed what can only be characterized as a meteoric rise to the top of the heap of attorneys who are involved in practicing family law. She is exceptionally well prepared; she cares about her clients; she is a tireless worker; she is exceptionally bright and intuitive; and she is tough and resolute in making certain that her clients get the best representation possible. I consider Michelle to be one of the top family lawyers in our county. Anyone looking for a family law attorney need would be well served by her."

"After having worked with Michelle in the past and seen how she handles cases, I can confidently say that Michelle is a worthy opponent and a fierce advocate for her clients. At the same time, she is practical, and does not create conflict if not necessary. I would not hesitate in referring a case to her."
