THE LAW OFFICE OF DEBRA L. ACKERMAN
HELPING OTHERS SINCE 1985
In 1979, I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in social work; however my passion was always the law. I graduated from Washington College of Law, American University in 1985 and I have devoted myself to providing clients with professional service and attention to each client’s individual needs. After graduating from the Washington College of law in 1985, I became skilled in litigation, working with experienced attorneys, while gaining exposure to a broad range of legal cases, including complex and other civil litigation, all types of family law matters, probate matters, personal injury defense and Plaintiff’s personal injury matters, bankruptcy and criminal defense. In May, 1993, I opened my own law practice, which provided me with the opportunity to assist clients of all means and needs. In 2002, I moved my office from Washington, D.C. to Montgomery County, Maryland, where my law office remains. My law practice is devoted to advocating for individuals and companies, providing individual attention to each client’s needs throughout Maryland and the District of Columbia. My law practice today handles every type of family law matter, including preparation of Marital Settlement (separation and property settlement agreements), divorce, both contested and uncontested , custody, domestic violence, and child support cases; personal injury criminal defense, including assault cases, traffic matters, theft and DWIs, civil litigation, and Will preparation. My goal will be always be to obtain the best result possible for each individual client.
At the Law Office of Debra L Ackerman, you will receive my individual attention and will never be passed over to an associate. I will provide zealous representation and legal advice based upon my over 30 years of experience. My goal will be, when possible to resolve each client’s issues without the need for contentious litigation, but you can rest assured that when there is a need to litigate your case, my office will be prepared to zealously litigate all of your issues.
For many individuals, it is your first time seeking legal representation. The Court procedures and process can seem daunting to those unfamiliar with the court system and legal process, regardless of the nature of your issues. At the Law Office of Debra l. Ackerman, I will patiently guide you through this process. Always remember that there are no stupid questions when addressing your individual situation and needs.

Offering legal services in the District of Columbia and Maryland, primarily in Montgomery, Frederick, Prince George’s, Howard and Anne Arundel, in both the District and Circuit courts at reasonable rate. While you may be tempted to represent yourself in court, I have seen first-hand the problems that can arise. Pro se litigants are held to the same standards as attorneys in the courtroom. Often an attorney is able to get matters resolved quickly and avoid costly litigation. The cost of fixing a problem can often e greater than if your case was handled right in the first place. Maryland now allows attorneys to help prepare pleadings or enter a case to attend a hearing or for an appearance limited a single issue. Please visit my website to learn more.

Divorce
Debra is THE ONE to hire if you're going through a complicated divorce (or any divorce, really). Long story short, my divorce took 3 years, 3 months and 25 days from start to finish. Champion of the Underdog
Debra was my lawyer and my savior during my divorce from an unyielding and uncompromising ex. Prior to finding Debra, I had retained a "top divorce lawyer" in downtown Silver Spring, who dragged my case out for months and never did anything except bill me. (I actually started to feel like they were p...

Debra L. Ackerman
Before I hired Debra Ackerman I had consulted a couple of other lawyers, who didn't consider my case worth fighting for, so my expectations of Ms. Ackerman were very low. However, I was soon made aware of her special skills in drawing out a client and building a solid case, for establishing and mai...
