A week apart shouldn't make any difference but bring a copy of his L-1 approval to show he will be in L-1 status once he enters.

Are you positive you are not subject? If so then you can change status to another status so you can remain in the U.S. while your process is ongoing.

By visitor visa do you mean B-1? You will also need to submit an I-864 but with your wife on welfare you may need a co-sponsor.
