Biography
Farhad Alavi is a Washington, DC-based attorney with extensive experience in international trade compliance and defense, as well as international commercial transactions. This includes advising clients on OFAC sanctions and BIS export controls, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), and US Customs matters, along with white collar criminal defense in IEEPA (sanctions) matters. Most recently, he has secured the removal of a company off the BIS Entity List and has secured the releases of large numbers of goods detained by US Customs & Border Protection (CBP).
Mr. Alavi has appeared on the BBC, Al Jazeera English & Arabic, CGTN, BBC Persian, and VOA Persian and have been quoted in the Financial Times, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Huffington Post, ArabianBusiness (Dubai) and other publications. He has spoken on trade compliance issues throughout the United States and Europe, as well as the Middle East.
Internationally, Mr. Alavi has done extensive Middle East-related work (especially the GCC and specifically the UAE) and also has significant experience with other key emerging and frontier markets such as east Asia and Latin America.
