No you cannot really self petition. You may wish to consult with an immigration attorney to determine if you have other options.

The grandfather's file will not help unless your boyfriend can claim US citizenship because of the grandfather's citizenship.

No you do not have to leave. You can apply for a change of status while you are in the US.

When you quit your job you will be out of status. If you are in the US out of status for 6 months you will trigger a three year bar to re-entry...
