My wife has been in the states since 2006 with student visa already expired. Can she travel out of the states and come back ?

If you are a US citizen you should apply now for her visa and green card. Hire a lawyer though.

They will each have to spend at least half of the five year period in the US. More is better.

Not true at all. If you move you must notify USCIS of the new address. You have the receipt numbers and can check the status of your applications...

Apparently it is normal for her. Many attorneys do go to the asylum interview with their clients.
