As an intern in the Juvenile Public Defenders Office, I worked with a young girl who became caught up in the Juvenile Justice system through no fault of her own, as a result of an impoverished, neglige ... nt home. Her parents were unable to support her and sent her to live with an uncle in Georgia who used her to commit crimes, without her knowledge. Because the girl was from Texas, her family had no idea what was going on, or that she was locked up for several months. The judge refused to believe she was being truthful about her identity and minor status, and instead accused her of being an illegal immigrant who was lying about her age in order to stay in the United States. Using school records, I was able to verify her identity and contacted the family in Texas to alert them to the situation. The family spoke no English, so I gave them the news in broken Spanish, but somehow they understood. They drove 14 hours on borrowed money in order to see if they could help the child. Once the family arrived with documentation to confirm the child's identity, I was able to convince the judge to release the child to her family. I've never been hugged so much in my life.
