Mathieu Jode Shapiro

Mathieu J. Shapiro is a partner in the Litigation Department of Obermayer Rebmann Maxwell & Hippel LLP and an elected member of the firm’s Management Committee. He is chair of the e-Discovery Practice Group.

Throughout his career, Mr. Shapiro has worked on numerous high-profile cases, including many reported in the pages of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Philadelphia Daily News, and Philadelphia’s local legal newspaper, The Legal Intelligencer.

Mr. Shapiro is known for his strategic and results-oriented approach to litigation in which he focuses on his clients' business and legal goals. Some of his more notable cases include representing:

• Several national and international financial institutions in matters related to alleged breaches of contract, alleged agent misconduct, alleged bad investments and alleged bad investment advice.
• A prominent insurance company in a state-wide class action related to discounts available in automobile insurance policies.
• A municipality and its mayor in litigation concerning the right to appoint members to the local municipal authority.
• Both a local school district and a local charter school in matters relating to statutory funding, Department of Education audits, and other litigation matters.
• Many employers and employees in attempts to enforce restrictive covenants and to protect valuable trade secrets.
• National companies involved in mergers and acquisitions who are sued by their shareholders for breach of fiduciary duty or aiding and abetting breaches of fiduciary duty.
• A local Fortune 500 company in litigation regarding the constitutionality of a Pennsylvania statute restricting the successor-related asbestos liability of Pennsylvania corporations.
• Several well-known plaintiff law firms in litigation related to their break-ups, or their hiring of lateral partners from other firms.
• A local professional sports franchise in a lawsuit against a municipality relating to the interpretation of the franchise’s stadium lease.
• A local township in high profile civil rights litigations involving alleged discrimination in zoning procedures and in police conduct.

Many of Mr. Shapiro’s cases have involved electronic discovery and digital forensic issues. In recognition of the growing importance of e-Discovery to his clients, Mr. Shapiro created Obermayer's e-Discovery and Information Management Practice Group. A proponent of “proportionality” in e-Discovery, Mr. Shapiro attempts to keep the costs of e-Discovery commensurate with the value of the case. He is a member of the Sedona Conference and the working group on Electronic Document Retention and Production.
