Michael Berkowitz is senior counsel in the Saxton & Stump Intellectual Property and Intellectual Property Litigation groups, based in the firm’s Lehigh Valley office. With more than 30 years of experience advising innovators and business leaders, Michael is trusted for his ability to translate complex intellectual property issues into clear, actionable strategies that protect innovation, manage risk, and drive long-term enterprise value.

He joined Saxton & Stump following his work at Design IP, a Lehigh Valley intellectual property firm with a worldwide reputation in design patent law that has since been integrated into Saxton & Stump. Michael advises domestic and international clients across the full IP lifecycle, offering strategic guidance in areas such as:

Preparing and prosecuting U.S. and foreign patents, trademarks, and copyrights

Freedom-to-operate analysis, including non-infringement and invalidity assessments

His experience on both the litigation and counseling sides of IP matters enables him to anticipate challenges, assess exposure, and deliver practical solutions that balance legal strength with commercial realities.

Michael’s patent practice is grounded in deep technical knowledge, with a focus on mechanical and electromechanical technologies. He works extensively with medical device companies on innovations such as wearable injectors and pumps, cardiac navigation and ablation systems, catheters, stents, syringes, orthopedic braces, and orthodontic and dental devices. His experience also spans a broad range of technically sophisticated industries, including robotics, automotive systems, consumer products, image processing and photography, food service equipment, piezo-driven systems, semiconductors, hand tools, and juvenile products.

A Lehigh Valley native, Michael earned his law degree from Widener University School of Law and his industrial engineering degree from Lehigh University. Before entering private practice, Michael spent five years working as an industrial and producibility engineer for General Electric Space Systems Division in Valley Forge, Pa., an experience that continues to shape his practical, business-minded approach to intellectual property law.
