Client was traveling southbound on Highway 525 on Whidbey Island. An underinsured motorist was traveling in the opposite direction and negligently entered the southbound lane as he was distracted while ... reaching for his sunglasses. He drove directly into client's vehicle, which was then knocked into a ditch on the side of the road. Injuries were significant and included a fracture to the zygomatic arch (side of cheek bone) which required surgery; fracture of the left maxillary sinus (located below the eye, on the cheekbone) which required surgery; comminuted fracture of inferior and lateral walls of the left orbit eye socket which required surgery; displaced acute fracture of the coronoid process of the mandible (top border of the jaw bone) which required surgery; subcutaneous emphysema (when air or gas gets under the skin) of the left cheek and eyelid; traumatic brain injury with loss of consciousness at scene; partial loss of taste; partial facial paralysis; neck and upper back strain; and bilateral knee pain and contusions.
