Very complicated and complex murder case alleging that Mr. Phillips starved his 7 year-old foster son to death over a lengthy period of time. Involved assessing complicated legal issues such as child ... hearsay statements, confrontation clause issues, admissibility of allegations of other misconduct by Mr. Phillips, and very, very complicated medical testimony. We presented expert testimony that alleged that rather than being intentionally starved to death, the child suffered from undiagnosed diabetes, which ulitmately led to his weight loss and dehydration, and eventually his death. While the jury convicted Mr. Phillips, they also concluded that they did not believe the Government experts who argued that the child absolutely did not have diabetes.
