Brian Virag, attorney from the law firm of MYBEDBUGLAWYER in Encino, CA, obtained a 3.5 million dollar verdict for bedbugs against PLB Management, the property management company for Park LaBrea Apartm ... ents. This was the largest verdict for bedbugs ever recorded in history. Park LaBrea is the largest apartment complex west of the Mississippi that has more than 4300 apartment units. Mr. Virag represented 16 current and former resident of Park LaBrea who occupied 8 different units at the Park LaBrea Complex. His clients were all exposed to bedbugs between 2011-2013. After a 5-week trial in the Los Angeles Superior Court, a jury found PLB Management negligent and in breach of contract for their handling of the bedbug situation that was ongoing at the complex since 2008. The jury returned verdicts ranging from $77,000 to $850,000 for each unit that had been exposed to what Virag calls “Blood-Sucking Vampire Insects”. Although the medical bills in this case were less than $2,000, the jury awarded millions of dollars to the Plaintiffs for the emotional distress, sleeplessness, anxiety and humiliation in having to live with bedbugs. This is the fourth landmark verdict obtained by Virag in 2017 that included a $546,000 verdict in October against the Hilton Garden Inn whose clients were exposed to bedbugs for a one-night hotel stay. Hopefully, these verdicts will help Landlords and Hotels “do the right thing” when people complain about being bitten by bedbugs and take proactive steps to protects their guests and tenants.
