People v. Johnny Ray Tucker
Jun 08, 1987
OUTCOME: Acquitted of Murder
Johnny Ray Tucker, a young African-American man who grew up in San Francisco's infamous Double Rock housing projects, was charged with murder in the shooting of a young white man who had come to the pr...ojects to buy rock cocaine. After grabbing the cocaine from a dealer, the young man sped off without paying for it. He died in a hail of gunfire from a group of alleged drug dealers. Mr. Tucker, already a leader in his community by the age of 20, was accused of firing the fatal shot.
The state's case rested upon the veracity of witnesses who had been in the crowd on the night of the killing. It was prosecuted by San Francisco's most renowned homicide prosecutor, Bill Fazio. Mr. Quigley vigorously attacked the credibility of the state's eyewitnesses, some of whom had "snitched" in order to seek favor with the authorities in their own criminal cases. With Mr. Quigley defending, a first trial ended with the jury hung 11-1 in favor of acquittal. At the second trial, which Mr. Quigley also defended, Mr. Tucker was acquitted of all charges and was immediately released.

People v. Floyd Andrews
N/A
OUTCOME: Acquitted of Assault with a Deadly Weapon
Floyd Andrews was a prosecutor who worked for the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In 2001, at his home in San Rafael, California, he came upon two men who were urinating on his house. He ar...gued with them, and a fight ensued in which Mr. Andrews stabbed one of the men, Stanley Martin, severing a rib and part of the liver. Martin almost died as a result of his injuries, and Mr. Andrews was charged with aggravated assault. The possible penalty was over 10 years in the state prison.
With Mr. Quigley defending, Mr. Andrews was acquitted of the assault after a sensational trial that was covered nationally by newspapers, television and radio. The jury agreed with Mr. Quigley's contention that the prosecution of this respected law enforcement official was politically motivated and the result of the unfriendly relations between the San Francisco District Attorney and the Marin County District Attorney. Mr Andrews avoided any jail or prison confinement, and retained his license to practice law as a result of the defense victory.
