OUTCOME: Released from prison after more than a decade
Brian B. had been promised by the court and the District Attorney that after no more than ten years in prison he would be released on parole. When that time came, the D.A. and the prison officials said..., that though he deserved to be released, they would not do so.
Through the work of Attorney Bloom, the D.A. admitted that he felt that Brian should be released but his office had a policy of "never agreeing to anyone to be released".
Over the course of a legal battle that took six years, Attorney Bloom challenged that decision by filing a Petition for a Writ of Habeas Corpus which was litigated in the California Superior Court, the California Court of Appeal, the California Supreme Court, the United States District Court, the United States Circuit Court of Appeal, and finally, the United Supreme Court.
The result: Brian was released and new case law and precedent was established.

People v. Cynthia Sommer
N/A
OUTCOME: Motion for New Trial Granted
With virtually no evidence whatsoever, Cynthia Sommer was charged with poisoning her marine husband - over two years his death had been ruled to be natural. Without hard evidence that her husband was ...poisoned and with absolutely NO evidence that Ms. Sommer had ever had anything to do with any poison, the District Attorney was able to gain her conviction primarily by highlighting her life style. In what was referred to on Court TV, Dateline, 48 Hours, Larry King, and all the news media outlets as "conduct unbecoming a widow", the D.A. gained a murder conviction against Ms. Sommer, while she was represented by another attorney.
Before she was sentenced, Mr. Bloom took over her case and was able to reverse the conviction. After months of work, and hundreds of hours of time, Mr. Bloom was able to convince the trial court that evidence that her husband was poisoned and evidence that Ms. Sommer had anything to do with any poison were non-existent, and instead of sentencing her to life imprisonment, the judge ordered a new trial.
In preparing for the new trial, Mr. Bloom was told by the D.A. that certain fresh evidence didn't exist, but he refused to accept these claims and pushed for the discovery of new evidence. As a result of his efforts, the evidence was found - sitting where it had been for over 6 years - and with the D.A.'s name right on the box!
The D.A. now had no choice but to test this new evidence and, in a stunning circumstance, the testing of this new evidence proved that there never was ANY evidence of arsenic in her husband's body and at 6:15 p.m. on April 17, 2008, Cynthia Sommer, with Mr. Bloom at her side, was able to walk out of the jail and breath fresh air for the first time in almost two and a half years.
She had been away from her children for almost 900 days. She carried with her the only belongings she now owned but she was a free woman and as both Mr. Bloom and Ms. Sommer told the story to DateLine, 48 Hours, Today, The Early Show, CBS, ABC, NBC, TruTV, PBS, L.A. Times, AP, The Jon Elliott Show on XM radio, and hundreds of other outlets, she would be able to start her life anew.
Even then, the D.A. tried to save face, claimed that the "system worked just like it was supposed to", and refused to dismiss the case for all purposes, ready to leave a cloud over Ms. Sommer's life rather than admit their errors. To gain this final victory, Attorney Bloom is continuing this fight.

Attorney Bloom has also taken the fight to the justice system by attempting to create the first-in-the-nation "Committee of Innocence" to look into what went wrong with the judicial system in Ms. Sommer's case. That battle continues.
