I was born in Winfield, Illinois and raised in Coral Springs, Florida. I attended undergrad at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where I obtained BAs in both Political Science and Asian Studies. Following graduation, I enrolled in law school at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan where I graduated with a Juris Doctorate in 2004.
During law school, I served as law clerk to the Honorable Richard D. Kuhn of the Oakland County Circuit Court in Pontiac, Michigan. As a law clerk, I was tasked with researching and writing opinions of the Court for the Judge’s review as well as operating the Court’s docket. After graduation from law school, I again served as law clerk to the Honorable Cheryl A. Matthews of the Oakland County Circuit Court. Following my clerkships, I returned to North Carolina to practice law when I went to work at a criminal defense firm in Winston Salem. There, I not only gained valuable courtroom and jury trial experience, but with all I had learned from my multiple clerkships I was able to quickly excel at evaluating and assessing the best courses of action for my criminal clients. In my role as a criminal defense attorney, I tried cases to verdict before juries in crimes ranging from DWI/DUI (both misdemeanor and felony level) to major felonies including murder, arson, and the like. After three years as a criminal defense attorney, I wanted to broaden my legal knowledge base, so I began practicing civil litigation by joining a large law firm in Durham, North Carolina
I ultimately spent several years working for one of the largest personal injury firms in North Carolina, where I gained substantial experience in the defense and litigation of personal injury claims. Based on this experience, I have intimate knowledge in the strategies and methods the insurance companies employ in evaluating, settling, defending, and trying such claims before a jury.
After working for a number of years in civil litigation, I opened up my own general practice firm in Greensboro, North Carolina. There I handled both criminal and civil litigation cases. But after operating that firm for a few years, I was drawn by the call to serve my Country. As such, I joined the United States Army to serve as a member of its Judge Advocate General Corps by direct commissioning as a First Lieutenant. I was immediately mobilized and sent to Fort Bragg for assignment as an assistant staff judge advocate. Several months later, I was sent to Fort Lee, Virginia for JAG training and eventually to the JAG school in Charlottesville, Virginia. Upon completion of JAG school, I was sent to an infantry company at Fort Benning, Georgia for an officer leadership training course. This course taught me how to be a leader and how to effectively solve problems while under tremendous stress. After completing this course, I was promoted to the rank of Captain and returned to Fort Bragg to serve as the Chief of Military Justice for my unit. In my capacity as the Chief of Military Justice, I prosecuted well over a hundred separation boards and was recognized for my work by receiving the Army Commendation Medal. In October of 2014, I completed my multiple mobilizations and returned to the civilian world to practice law. I joined the Maurer Law firm in Raleigh and still maintain my commission in the United States Army as a member of the U.S. Army Reserves at Fort Bragg.
Having served as a prosecutor for the Army, a law clerk for circuit court judges and also as a defense attorney before starting my own private practice, I have the unique ability to see your case from both sides. I am an aggressive advocate for my clients and am committed to their best interests at all times.
As my client, you can expect a helpful, straight-talking guide to lead you through the complex and confusing legal system. I have tried a broad range of criminal and civil matters and I understand that the legal process can be frightening and overwhelming. In order to minimize unavoidable stress and uncertainty, I take the time to explain each step of your case and answers any questions you may have.
