Jennifer Mina Deteso

I am a Senior Associate at Tully Rinckey PLLC in Latham, New York, where I focus my practice on criminal defense, family and matrimonial law, and post-conviction litigation. I represent clients throughout the Capital Region and across New York State.

I bring nearly a decade of litigation experience to every case. I began my career at Am Law 200 firms in Boston and DC, where I spent almost six years handling complex, high-stakes litigation, including First Amendment, shareholder, antitrust, insurance, and real estate disputes. That background taught me how to master a demanding record, anticipate the other side, and build a case that holds up under pressure. I now put those skills to work for individuals facing some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

On the criminal side, I have significant experience challenging convictions and sentences. I have drafted direct appeal briefs, CPL motions, and petitions for writs of habeas corpus, and I have represented clients serving lengthy sentences, including a client serving life without parole for first-degree murder and a client sentenced to 25 years to life whose defense centered on mental illness and lack of criminal culpability. This work requires close review of extensive trial records and close relationships with clients and their families, and it shapes how I approach every criminal matter, from the first consultation forward.

On the family law side, I handle divorce, child custody, visitation, orders of protection, and related matrimonial matters. I understand that family court cases are personal, urgent, and often frightening, and I give clients practical advice tailored to their goals rather than one-size-fits-all answers.

I earned my J.D. from Boston College Law School and my B.A. from the University of Richmond. My published work includes two co-authored articles in The Boston Law Tribune on expert evidence and on the criminalization of health care lawyering. I am admitted to practice in New York and Massachusetts.
