Like mine, the immigrant’s journey begins with constant stress and nightly tears but ends with Attorney Nic. I was raised to grow rice in the Philippines but found my passport to the United States through teaching. I met the love of my life, an American, but our time together was far from certain. ... My J-1 visa was expiring and USCIS was likely to force me back to poverty for a two-year waiting period.
