Medical Malpractice – 52 year old Union pipe insulator suffered severe ischemia (lack of blood flow) caused by a blood clot following a knee replacement surgery. The lack of blood flow went undiagnose ... d for more than 36 hours and resulted in a permanent and painful nerve injury to the man’s left lower leg. There was evidence that plaintiff was exhibiting signs of neurovascular compromise in the lower extremity for almost the entire period before the defendant surgeon, residents and nurses intervened to address the problem. As a result of the lengthy delay, plaintiff developed compartment syndrome and was forced to undergo eight subsequent surgeries to relieve the increased pressure in his lower leg. Plaintiff ultimately lost substantial muscle tissue and nerve function in the lower extremity. He developed a significant and permanent neuropathic pain condition and drop foot, and essentially lost the use of his left leg. His foot and ankle are in a permanent distorted position. He must wear a specially designed prosthetic brace and the abnormal angle of his foot results in recurring lesions on the bottom of his foot. The defendant surgeon offered to amputate the plaintiff’s leg in an effort to relieve his pain.
