James Ticchio is a credit reporting and background check lawyer serving clients in New Jersey and New York. He is a partner of Sherman & Ticchio PLLC, where he has assisted consumers with errors on their credit reports and background check reports since 2021. James’ caseload as an FCRA lawyer can be broken down into two main categories: credit report errors and employment background check errors.
James’ credit report cases include cases regarding identity theft, mixed credit files, inaccurate deceased reporting, and other “status” cases. Identity theft cases come in the form of accounts being opened without a client’s knowledge or consent, or unauthorized charges being made to legitimate credit accounts. In mixed file cases, James assists clients who have had their credit files combined by consumer reporting agencies with one or more other consumers. Occasionally, James assists clients who have been inaccurately listed as deceased by a credit bureau, and lastly, James works with clients who have had the status of their account misreported. This may include a paid account being marked as unpaid, or a mortgage being double-reported.
As a New York and New Jersey FCRA lawyer, James has brought numerous lawsuits across Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Bergen County, and many other locations across New York and New Jersey against credit bureaus such as Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. He also has experience litigating against bureaus such as LexisNexis and Corelogic Credco.
James’ background check reporting cases typically arise when clients are rejected for a potential job based on a false criminal history appearing on a background check report. This is often caused by a mixing of his clients’ files with those of individuals with similar names and dates of birth, although rarely it may be the result of identity theft. James has brought cases for background check errors against major background check companies ranging from First Advantage to Accurate Background and .
James works with consumers at all stages of the credit report and background check report litigation process. He assists clients in preparing dispute letters, advises regarding appropriate litigation strategy, and brings cases in federal court under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
James attended Georgetown University Law Center, where he earned his Juris Doctor. He also earned his B.A., summa cum laude in his studies of the legal field at Ramapo College of New Jersey.
James makes a point of providing clients with a simple, easy to follow path through the course of their dealings with the credit reporting and background check reporting systems. Clients can count on James to be both approachable and dedicated to answering their questions and concerns.
