If you are over 21 and an American citizen you can apply for them right away.

You will lose that status while your adjustment case is pending. Does it really matter?

You will not have to do biometrics while in the USA so the security check is not as expanded as when you file for an adjustment of status or...

If you can show that you entered the country with a visa then your wife can file for you and you should get your green card in a few months.
