In the ruins of ancient Pompeii, among the remains that were preserved in volcanic ash thousands of years ago, a parchment was found that detailed a court case. Apparently, a slave had taken his master to court in an effort to gain his freedom, based on the slavery laws of Rome. He alleged that his mother was actually a freed slave, and therefore he was born free and could never be a slave.

I am proud to be part of a profession that, even in its infancy, showed such lofty purpose. At its heart, representing a person at a trial is largely unchanged from dozens of centuries ago. From the time of that case up to today, every trial attorney must possess the ability to know and to tell "your" story even better than you could do so yourself. Otherwise, what's the point?
