Growing up in Astoria, New York, after my parents immigrated from India to England in the late 1960s and then to the U.S. in 1989, I learned early how fragile legal status can be. A reckless immigration attorney left my family in legal limbo, and I spent my teenage years watching my parents’ hopes and dreams stall in endless detention hearings and backlog queues. Seven years later, I won the Green Card lottery as a U.K.-born national, a victory that offered my family a fresh start. As soon as I became a U.S. citizen, I sponsored my parents for their Green Cards—an achievement that reshaped our family’s destiny. Now as an attorney, I channel that ordeal into every case, committed to providing compassionate, meticulous representation so no one else endures the fear and uncertainty we faced.
