There are no words that can properly convey the respect and appreciation that I have for Andrew Mancilla. I first met Andrew in December of 2013, almost a year and a half after my fiancé was first arrested and charged. In the months before my fiancé and I met Andrew, we had worked with two other atto...rneys, both of whom pushed for my fiancé to take a sentence that neither of us were happy with and repeatedly failed to file motions on his behalf. From the moment we met Andrew, we knew he was different from both of those attorneys. He immediately started filing motions, contacting the District Attorney assigned to my fiancé’s case, but most importantly, he wanted to get to know us. In the year and a half that we had been dealing with this case, no one had ever asked to sit down and really meet us. Andrew spent hours simply speaking with both my fiancé and I because he felt he need to know who he was representing. He wanted to really know who my fiancé was so that he was adequately prepared to argue why it was that the court’s offer of twelve years was too much. By the time of my fiancé’s next court date arrived, Andrew had expertly prepared all that he needed to, established a rapport with the DA and the judge assigned to the case and was able to get the court to offer my fiancé seven years! We were astonished and delighted, but Andrew wasn’t done yet. He was able to get my fiancé three very necessary adjournments so that could he deal with his health, settle his necessary affairs and attend his daughter’s graduation ceremony. During this time Andrew went about gathering character letters on my fiancé behalf, in the hope of getting the court’s offer lowered. In the end, he was successful and was able to arrange for a five-year sentence. I was left dumbstruck that Andrew was able to negotiate such an amazing sentence from a notoriously difficult judge and my fiancé was left in tears. Throughout the time that I have known Andrew, what has struck me most was not only his expertise at his craft, or his ambition to do more in his career—including creating his own practice—or even his charisma. What is most striking about Andrew is his genuine kindness towards his clients. There was not a single time that we called or texted Andrew and did not receive an immediate response. Whenever we needed him he went out of his way to speak to us, to explain to us some mundane law, to answer any questions we had—no matter how silly they were. Andrew took the time to get to know us not only in a client capacity, but also as people. We mattered to him as individuals and as a couple and although he was legally my fiancé’s attorney, he always made me feel welcomed and important to the process that we were all going through together. I’m so grateful for Andrew. My fiancé and I struggled tremendously when this case first began. I don’t know if our relationship would have withstood the continued stress of this court case and the amount of time he was initially being offered. Although I am not an extremely religious person, I truly do believe that Andrew was a godsend. He gave us hope when we had none and gave us results when we no longer expected them. Prior to meeting Andrew, my fiancé and I had all but given up on this case and were slowly giving up on each other. He managed to resolve our court dilemma in the best possible way and helped us strengthen our relationship when we needed to the most.
