Caroline Rule

Caroline Rule has extensive experience representing clients who are facing investigation or prosecution for alleged tax fraud, bank fraud, health care fraud, money-laundering, and other white collar crimes.  Ms. Rule has successfully represented clients in sensitive Internal Revenue Service audits, "tax shelter" matters, criminal charges for failure to file tax returns, and failure to report offshore assets.   She is also experienced in complex commercial litigation, including trademark disputes.

 Representative Matters

• Ms. Rule avoided criminal prosecution of a client who regularly gambled at casinos by demonstrating that government’s calculations of the client’s earnings from gambling were based on faulty mathematics.
   
• Ms. Rule obtained a 12-month sentence in a case where the defendant pled guilty to bankruptcy fraud and tax evasion and faced a sentence of over three years in jail, and subsequently persuaded the court to shorten significantly    the period of probation that had been imposed.
   
• Along with Robert S. Fink, Ms. Rule successfully averted prosecution of an NBA referee who had cashed in employer-provided first class air tickets for economy tickets and failed to declare as income the difference in price; all other referees accused of the same conduct were prosecuted.
